Longboard Trucks
Which Longboard Trucks Are Best for Me?
Trucks are a vital component of your longboard setup. Longboard trucks are T-shaped parts that connect the wheels to the deck, permitting riders to turn. Selecting the appropriate trucks depends on your preferred style of longboarding.
The design of your longboard deck will influence whether you require top-mounted trucks or a drop-through truck mounting. With top mount trucks, you easily fasten the entire truck to the underside of the deck. If your deck has a drop-through design with holes at both ends, you will need to disassemble the same type of longboard trucks, insert the baseplate with the kingpin through the deck, and then attach the hanger from below.
Top-mounted trucks offer excellent manoeuvrability and responsive riding, while drop-through trucks provide increased stability and more effortless pushing.
What Size Trucks Fit a Longboard?
The standard hanger width for longboard trucks ranges from 150 mm to 180 mm. Generally, the trucks should match the width of your board, although they can be slightly wider or narrower. Wider trucks enhance stability but make turning more difficult and can lead to wheel bite. Narrower trucks, conversely, are less stable but facilitate easier turning.
What Angle Should I Set My Longboard Trucks?
The angle of your longboard trucks significantly affects how your longboard turns. This refers to the kingpin’s angle relative to the baseplate. Common longboard angles range from 35° to 55°. Generally, a higher angle offers greater manoeuvrability and turning capabilities. A "high" angle of around 50° is the most frequent choice, ideal for carving, cruising, and novice riders. A "low" angle is more appropriate for seasoned and competitive riders aiming for top speeds during downhill rides.
