Skateboard Griptape
Enhancing Grip and Style with Skateboard Griptape
The self-adhesive sheet known as skateboard griptape is affixed to the top of your skateboard. Resembling sandpaper, it has a granulated surface that ensures a firm stance and traction on the board. Typically crafted from silicon carbide, skateboard griptapes are often available in a standard dimension of 9 x 33 inches (23 cm x 84 cm). They can be purchased as an individual sheet or in rolls of griptape.
While black griptape remains the most common, skateboarders increasingly favour brightly coloured alternatives. Some manufacturers even produce clear versions.
Steps for Removing Skateboard Griptape
As you frequently ride, skate griptape will eventually wear down. The granulated texture becomes smoother with exposure to shoes and dirt, complicating trick execution.
To remove griptape, use a hairdryer to apply hot air. This will soften the adhesive, making it more pliable, allowing you to peel it off with ease using a box knife. Any leftover adhesive can be scraped off gently after being softened with nail polish remover or an alcohol-based cleaner. Once all residues have been cleared, a fresh griptape can be applied to your deck.
The Technique for Applying Griptape on a Skateboard
Applying skateboard griptape is straightforward and requires minimal tools. Begin by peeling off the backing paper from the griptape’s adhesive side. Carefully align and press the sticky side onto the skateboard deck, ensuring that it is centrally positioned.
As you attach it to the deck, it's crucial to remove any air bubbles – many modern griptapes are perforated to facilitate this. Once smooth, trim each corner of the griptape. Create guidelines along the deck edge for the cutout by pressing the tape down with a tool. Next, trim any excess griptape with a sharp knife. Finally, pierce holes for the bolts with a pointed tool.
