BMX Frames
Defining BMX Frames
The frame of a BMX bike is the largest and costliest component of your BMX setup. It substantially affects your riding style and how you progress as a rider. Both freestyle and race BMX frames feature the classic diamond shape; however, race frames are longer to offer enhanced stability.
Freestyle BMX frames aim to be robust and resilient, able to endure significant impacts. Typically, they are manufactured from steel. Conversely, race frames are designed to be as light as possible and are usually made from aluminium.
Which BMX Frame Size is Right for Me?
Frames are available in a variety of sizes. Ultimately, the frame size you select is a personal choice, although a general guideline is that taller individuals should opt for larger frames.
Frame sizes generally relate to the length of their top tube. For freestyle frames, this measurement is given in inches. In terms of race BMX frames, the sizes are categorised by “frame names” starting from Mini, ascending to Pro XXXXL.
In addition to the top tube length, the angle of the head tube is another element that can influence the bike's overall feel. A steeper angle brings the front wheel closer, facilitating front-end tricks, while a gentler angle places the wheel further away, granting more stability at high speeds. If you're uncertain about your preference, choose the industry standard, ranging from 74° to 76°, for a balanced setup.
Understanding the BMX Chainstay
The chainstay on a BMX is the segment measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the centre of the rear axle. The axle can either be entirely inserted in the rear dropout (slammed, the shortest chainstay possible) or positioned in the centre of the dropout. The chainstay is critical to your frame and influences your bike’s handling. Chainstay lengths typically range from 12 to 14 inches.
Park and street riders often prefer a shorter chainstay for a more responsive feel, allowing for quick spins and sharp turns. Trail riders favour a longer rear end for greater stability and control.
