BMX Handlebars
Understanding BMX Handlebars
For BMX bikes, handlebars are crucial for maintaining control. They are robust and long-lasting, typically crafted from materials like 4130 Chromoly, aluminium, or high tensile steel. Many handlebars also undergo heat-treatment, a process that further enhances their strength.
BMX handlebars are divided into two categories: two-piece and four-piece bars. Two-piece bars utilise two tubes, with one bent to create the main section and the second crossing the āUā between the handles for added stability. Four-piece bars consist of two main bars positioned vertically opposite each other, joined by two crossbars. The choice between these styles is largely a matter of personal preference and has minimal impact on riding performance.
Measuring BMX Handlebars
When selecting any BMX handlebar, consider four factors: rise, width, upsweep and backsweep. The upsweep refers to the angle at which the handles angle upwards, while the backsweep indicates the bend of the bars away from the centre. These aspects mostly cater to individual preference and have little effect on how the bike feels. Rise denotes the height of the bar, measured from its lowest to highest point. Width is measured from one bar end to the other, typically ranging from about 27 to 31 inches. Here are some straightforward guidelines for selecting the appropriate bar size.
Determining the Right BMX Handlebar Size
The height or rise of your handlebar is primarily a personal choice. However, taller riders may favour taller bars for increased comfort, reducing the need to bend over as much. Refer to our Handlebars Size Chart for more guidance on selecting the right height.
As for width, it is advisable to choose a bar that aligns with the width of your shoulders. A slightly wider bar can offer more stability, whereas some bikers prefer a narrower option to enhance knee clearance.
