BMX Cranksets
Understanding BMX Cranksets
The metal arms known as BMX cranks serve the purpose of linking bike pedals to the bottom bracket. Cranksets intended for freestyle are built for durability and play a vital role in generating forward movement on a BMX. In contrast to BMX race bike cranks, which are constructed from aluminium or carbon fibre, freestyle cranks are crafted from steel or Chromoly.
Varieties of BMX Cranksets
For freestyle BMX, cranksets are predominantly available in three types: 1-piece, 2-piece, and 3-piece. 1-piece cranks are supported by bearings and are frequently seen on basic bicycles and older models. 2-piece cranks come with a single crank bolt, feature easy installation and include a spindle that is incorporated into one of the arms. The 3-piece BMX cranksets are the most prevalent style on freestyle BMX bikes, being typically more robust and often slightly wider than 2-piece cranksets, albeit heavier.
Ideal Length of BMX Cranks
BMX crank arms come in various lengths, typically ranging from about 125mm to 190mm, but most riders prefer a length of 170mm or 175mm.
The choice of crank arm length ultimately comes down to personal preference, although it affects your riding. If your aim is to achieve high speed, it is advisable to select longer crank arms. For those inclined towards street riding, shorter arms are preferable as they offer better clearance.
Lastly, ensure your crankset is suitable for your pedals and be aware of your bottom bracket's size.
