Skating with your child can be both rewarding and delightful, providing not only valuable exercise but also enhancing your child's motor abilities such as balance, all while enjoying outdoor air. If your child is a beginner, skating together can offer them a sense of security.
Which is better: roller blades or roller skates?
Both roller blades and roller skates for children share some features, yet they also vary in certain respects. At SkatePro, all skate wheels are crafted from PU rubber (polyurethane) rather than plastic. Opting for rubber wheels is advantageous as they offer superior grip on surfaces compared to plastic wheels.
In addition, children's skates come with excellent ankle support, providing enhanced stability and control to your child.
Children's roller blades
Roller blades, or inline skates, facilitate speed building and maintenance due to narrower wheels, which result in reduced surface contact and consequently lower roll resistance.
These skates are typically lightweight and, with the absence of trucks, require less upkeep.
For extended trips with your child, we suggest opting for inline skates. Moreover, they can serve as a summer alternative to ice skates, enabling you to practise ice skating skills during warmer months.
Children's roller skates / quad skates
Roller skates (commonly referred to as quad skates) feature wheels placed in pairs rather than in a line, designed with a broad baseplate for increased stability and balance. They include a toe stop at the front, used for propulsion and as a brake.
Broader wheels on quad skates result in greater roll resistance, preventing your child from unexpectedly gaining too much speed.
With trucks positioned underneath, quad skates allow for adjusting skate hardness. This enables you to make the skate more manoeuvrable for agile turns or tighter for enhanced directional stability.
Known as the original skates, roller skates predate other types, and many parents choose them for nostalgic reasons, having owned a pair themselves during childhood.
Adjustable size children's skates
Most children's skates feature adjustable sizing, simplifying the size selection process. The size adjustment capability allows your child to grow with the skates, accommodating up to three or four sizes. Adjusting the size is straightforward; simply slide the boot forwards and backwards by pressing a button or other mechanism.
For skates that are not size adjustable, consider these tips:
- Consult the size guide provided on each product page.
- The general guidance is to opt for a size larger than the usual shoe size, unless the size guide specifies otherwise.
Skate protection
To minimise the risk of injuries, we advise always using a comprehensive set of skate protection covering the head, wrists, elbows, and knees.
Always opt for certified safety gear. At SkatePro, we only offer gear that complies with the EN 1078 standards, and much of it is additionally tested by skaters.
We suggest that children wear a skate helmet as it provides superior coverage for the back of the head. Such helmets are ideal for skating activities where falls typically occur backwards. Some skate helmets even allow for size adjustment. Children's wrist guards often have two plates, one atop and another beneath the hand, stabilising the hand and offering enhanced protection against fractures.
Refer to the size guide to determine the appropriate size selection.
Upkeep of Children's Skates
Proper care of your child's skates is essential to ensure they function smoothly over time. This includes:
- Avoiding use on sandy or wet surfaces.
- Storing skates in a dry location, preferably indoors.
