Marathon Inline Skates / Endurance Skates
Defining Marathon Inline Skates
Known also as endurance skates, marathon skates are crafted for extended sessions of inline skating. Unlike speed skates, marathon skates offer a higher cuff for enhanced ankle support on lengthy journeys. These skates come in both traditional four- and three-wheel styles, showcasing wheels sized 100mm, 110mm, and 125mm, along with elongated frames that ensure stability at greater speeds.
Selecting Skates for Extended Distances
Several factors should be considered when selecting a new pair of inline skates for long distances: the size of the wheels, boots, and frames.
For medium to long distances, skaters favouring fitness styles typically choose 100mm or 110mm wheels to maintain speed while conserving energy. Although 125mm wheels may feel heavier, they are the best choice for marathon skaters covering extensive distances. Your choice between a soft or hard boot shell depends on personal preference. Soft boots offer greater comfort and ventilation, whereas hard boots provide better stability and control. Long-distance inline skaters usually opt for long frames for superior stability and effective weight distribution.
Marathon Skates: Four Wheels Versus Three Wheels
As highlighted, endurance skates are available in four or three-wheel layouts. The wheel configuration affects the skate's overall feel. Skates with four wheels are more stable and feature improved weight distribution, though they are slower than three-wheel setups and cannot accommodate 125mm wheels. Generally, three-wheel configurations are lighter but offer less stability than their four-wheel counterparts.
