Balance Bikes
The Mechanics of Balance Bikes
Balance bikes, sometimes referred to as toddler bikes or push bikes, come without pedals, allowing the child to propel themselves forward using their legs. If a child can walk, they can manage a balance bike, which is why many models cater to children as young as two years old. These bikes offer an enjoyable and straightforward way for kids to learn, and some can grasp the concept in as short a time as 15 minutes!
Selecting the Perfect Balance Bike
Your child will achieve maximum comfort if they can stand flat-footed with a slight bend in their knee while seated on the bike. To ensure the correct size, it's advisable to measure your child's inseam with a tape measure. Ideally, the inseam should match the bike seat's height, which will be a tad higher when your child wears shoes.
Balance Bike Versus Training Wheels
Parents often ponder whether to choose a balance bike or a pedal bike equipped with stabilisers. While stabilisers can minimise the chances of falling, they make it more challenging for the child to learn balance after removal. In contrast, balance bikes help improve a child’s motor and balancing abilities and often make children feel more secure with their feet firmly on the ground.
Naturally, it's crucial for children to have proper protection while learning to ride. Have a look at our selection of kids’ helmets and pads in the Kids Scooter Protection category.
