Buoyancy Aids
How Do Buoyancy Aids Function?
Buoyancy aids, also known as buoyancy vests or jackets, are designed to provide buoyancy whilst in the water. They are suitable for a range of water sports like paddle boarding and are an indispensable piece of safety equipment.
It is important to note that buoyancy vests are not a replacement for a life jacket. When using buoyancy aids, it is presumed that the individual can swim or keep themselves afloat while waiting for help. Hence, buoyancy aids are perfect for activities where participants are near the shore and may expect to enter the water.
When shopping for a buoyancy aid, the term “50N” often appears in the product description, indicating the level of buoyancy provided by the jacket. A level of 50N is typical for buoyancy aids, whereas life jackets generally offer 100N or 150N.
Which Buoyancy Aid Should I Choose?
Buoyancy vests are constructed to be flexible, allowing for ample movement. They are not tailored to specific sports, so consider your swimming proficiency and the level of buoyancy required for your activity.
To determine the correct size, you need to know your weight and chest measurement. If you're uncertain whether the vest fits correctly, have someone attempt to lift the jacket from the shoulders after it's on. Should the jacket rise significantly (over 5cm), it is too loose, and you should either adjust the fit or select a smaller size.
