Understanding the Headset on a BMX Bike
The headset of a BMX bike is the essential component linking the fork to the frame, enabling the handlebar to rotate. It primarily consists of BMX headset bearings, but the specifics can differ based on the type you choose. Integrated headsets are predominant nowadays, though numerous quality non-integrated options are also on the market.
Determining the Correct Size BMX Headset
BMX headset standard size is 1 ⅛ inches, matching the fork steerer tube's diameter. Certain models are available in a tapered design, merging caps of 1⅛ and 1½ inches. There are also race BMX bikes and youth BMX bikes with headset tubes measuring a smaller 1 inch.
BMX headset spacers are frequently used to adjust the stack height, and C rings aid in centring the fork within the headtube.
Integrated vs Non-Integrated BMX Headsets
Integrated headsets are favoured among race and freestyle BMX enthusiasts. Their simplicity comes from having sealed bearings situated directly in the frame's headtube. This easy-to-install type offers a clean appearance.
Conversely, non-integrated headsets, identified as standard headsets, involve pressing separate cups into the headtube to hold the bearings. Typically equipped with unsealed bearings, they generate less friction during handlebar rotation.
Proper Greasing for the BMX Headset
When replacing headsets, applying a generous amount of grease to your new components is advisable. This will facilitate easier maintenance, cleaning, and replacement of the headset parts.
