BMX Grips
Understanding BMX Grips
Installed on your bike handlebars, BMX grips enhance control while riding. Typically crafted from rubber, the perfect grip should offer comfort, durability, and shock absorption. Selection is subjective, with countless BMX bike grips differing in diameter, pattern, flange, and design.
BMX grips can feature either a flange or be flangeless. A flange appears as a disk-like shape on the inner edge of the grip. Opting for a flanged grip is up to personal choice; however, it may afford greater control and offer some protection to the handlebar. On the downside, a flange might complicate performing manoeuvres like bar spins.
Dimensions of BMX Grips
BMX grips are available in various sizes and styles, generally ranging from 10-25 cm in length. Selecting the suitable grip depends on your handlebars' length and the extent of coverage you prefer. Many grips are designed to be universal, so they should fit most bars securely. Nevertheless, it's wise to confirm the grip's compatibility with your bar's material.
Additionally, consider the grip's firmness, ranging from “soft” to “hard.” Soft rubber grips provide a tacky feel but may wear more quickly, whereas harder grips offer more toughness and longevity.
Installing and Removing BMX Grips
A snug grip ensures optimal control but can make installation and removal a bit challenging. Several techniques can be used to manage this. One quick method, which won't harm your old grips, involves using zip ties and window cleaner (or another rapidly evaporating liquid).
Begin by inserting some zip ties into the grip to ease its removal. Spray window cleaner onto the grip and handlebar. This should allow your old grip to slide off with minimal resistance. Then, spray the cleaned handlebar area and slide your new grip on until it fits securely.
