Roller Hockey Wheels
Which Roller Hockey Wheels Are Suitable for Me?
It may seem straightforward, but when choosing new inline hockey wheels, it's essential they match the size of your existing ones. Roller hockey frames often boast a unique configuration, allowing each wheel on your skate to vary in size.
To minimise confusion, many frames will indicate the ideal wheel size. For example, if you have a hi-lo wheel configuration, it might display as: 80-80-76-76. These digits refer to the wheel diameter in millimetres. With this setup, your two rear wheels should be 80mm while the front ones should measure 76mm - typically, the largest wheels are always fitted at the rear of the frame.
Indoor vs Outdoor Roller Hockey Wheels
For the most enjoyable experience in roller hockey, utilise wheels crafted specifically for indoor or outdoor use. Indoor hockey skate wheels tend to be softer, usually with a durometer (wheel hardness) ranging from 72A to 76A. These softer wheels offer improved grip on smooth indoor arenas. Outdoor hockey wheels usually have a durometer of 80A or higher, to withstand hard, concrete surfaces.
Is it possible to have wheels for both settings? Theoretically, yes. Multisurface wheels are suitable for indoor and outdoor play and typically possess a durometer of 78A or 80A. However, players who participate in both indoor and outdoor hockey often prefer distinct sets of wheels for each environment.
