Cross Country Ski Bindings
Understanding Cross Country Ski Bindings
Cross country ski bindings are essential as they connect your skis to the boot and vary according to the discipline: classic, skate, and backcountry. When selecting boots and bindings for cross country skiing, it's crucial to note that boot soles differ per model, which can result in certain nordic ski bindings not being compatible with your boots.
Types of Cross Country Ski Bindings
There are several varieties of cross country ski bindings available. The most prevalent system today is the New Nordic Norm (NNN). Within NNN, there are standard NNN bindings for skate and classic styles, and NNN BC, specifically for backcountry. Both types feature two ridges on the binding plate.
Under the NNN umbrella, you will find products named Turnamic, Prolink, and NIS—these are brand-specific designations for their models. The key takeaway is that they all integrate with the NNN system. However, NNN BC bindings are only compatible with NNN BC boots.
The Salomon Nordic System (SNS) is another system previously common. Although no longer manufactured, it was designed for classic and skating boots. With only a single ridge, the SNS system is incompatible with New Nordic Norm.
The latest addition is the Xplore BC system, developed by Rottefella. This system employs pin technology at the toe to enhance stability and support and is exclusively compatible with Xplore BC boots.
