A Step-by-Step Guide - Unboxing and Assembling a Complete BMX
Begin by removing all packaging materials such as plastic and foam, and make sure everything intended is inside the box.
First segment of the assembly
- Apply grease to the pedal bolts.
- Differentiate between the left and right pedals.
- Rotate the right pedal clockwise and secure it with a spanner.
- Rotate the left pedal anticlockwise and tighten it thoroughly with a spanner.
- Loosen the bolts of the stem.
- Detach the faceplate of the stem.
- Grease the bolts of the stem.
- Install the handlebar.
- Position the faceplate on the stem, ensuring the knurled part of the handlebar is centralised in the stem.
- Secure the stem bolts in a cross pattern - there’s no need to fully fasten the faceplate at this stage.
- Loosen the top cap/compression bolt using an Allen key.
- Align the handlebars with the fork.
Next, prepare to attach the front wheel:
- Loosen the front axle nuts nearly all the way to accommodate the fork dropouts.
- Begin tightening the nuts with your fingers.
- Use a spanner to ensure the nuts are fully tightened.
- Insert the BMX seat into the seat tube, consider greasing the interior of the clamping zone for easier future seat post removal.
- Secure the seat clamp with an Allen key.
After the seat is fixed, refine the handlebars and fork alignment whilst seated on the bike. This simplifies making precise adjustments:
- Position the bar in line with the fork - use the front wheel as a reference point.
- Tighten the top cap/compression bolt using an Allen key.
- Finalise tightening the stem in a cross pattern, ensuring alternating bolts diagonally undergo tightening.
- Check for an even gap between the stem faceplate and the stem itself - it’s crucial to have an even tightening of the faceplate.
Before setting off for your ride, verify a few final aspects:
- Inspect the chain - it should not move more than 2 centimetres, remedy this by loosening the wheel and pulling it back to properly tension the chain.
- Ensure all nuts and bolts are fastened securely.
- Inflate the tyres to the recommended pressure (as noted in PSI on the tyre’s sidewall).
- Remove the valve cap to attach the pump.
- Inflate the tyre and replace the valve cap.
- Repeat the process for the other wheel.
- You’re now ready to enjoy the ride!
