BMX Sprockets
What Role Does a Sprocket Play?
BMX sprockets are essential for generating forward movement on a BMX bicycle. They play a crucial role in your bike’s drivetrain, influencing the feel of your ride. With various colour schemes and styles available, you can personalise your setup.
BMX bike sprockets are typically crafted from aluminium or steel variants. Aluminium sprockets offer a superior strength-to-weight ratio, while steel sprockets are more robust, cost-effective but also heavier. Considering a BMX sprocket guard is advisable, especially for aggressive riders who often engage with rails or curbs.
Which Sprocket Size is Ideal for BMX?
The suitable sprocket size is influenced by your riding style. BMX sprocket sizes are determined by the number of teeth they possess. On a Freestyle BMX bike, the typical range for the front sprocket is 25 to 28 teeth, though options from 16 to 45 teeth are available. Most contemporary freestyle BMX bikes feature a 25/9 gear ratio.
Increasing the teeth count on the front sprocket elevates the gear ratio, making it more challenging to start pedalling, yet enhancing speed capabilities and power output. Sprockets intended for racing come with more teeth, and many riders favour a 44/16 ratio.
