Characteristics of Roller Skate Wheels

Roller skate wheels, also known as quad wheels, are broader, offering a greater contact surface compared to inline skate wheels and ensuring enhanced balance for skaters. Each roller skate wheel has its unique attributes. They differ in size, hardness, and shape. The diameter, or height, of the wheels is measured in millimetres (mm), typically ranging from 55mm to 65mm. The hardness of a skate wheel, known as its durometer, is gauged on the A-scale, ranging from 74A (very soft) to 105A (very hard).

Determining the Size of Roller Skate Wheels

Selecting the appropriate quad skate wheels is dependent on your skating style. These styles can be categorised into Indoor Skating and Outdoor Skating.

Wheels for indoor roller skating are generally small to medium-sized, offering superior control and manoeuvrability in the rink. Rhythm skaters typically prefer wheels with a diameter of 62mm and a width between 35mm and 44mm. Figure skaters' wheels usually measure between 55-65mm in diameter and 30-31mm in width. For outdoor skating, the wheels are larger and have a rounded surface for enhanced stability. Standard outdoor wheels are 55-65mm in diameter and around 40mm in width.

Hardness of Roller Skate Wheels: Indoor & Outdoor

When it comes to indoor rhythm and figure skating, very hard wheels are often favoured as they provide better speed on smooth surfaces. The standard range is between 97A and 103A. Conversely, fitness quad skaters who venture outdoors tend to prefer softer wheels that function as shock absorbers across various terrains. Such wheels typically have a hardness that varies from 78A to 85A. Speed skating wheels, being harder than those used for fitness, facilitate a faster roll on smooth urban surfaces. Speed roller skaters utilise wheels with a hardness between 95A and 98A.
