Kick Wax
Kick Wax for Classic Cross Country Skis
Often referred to as grip wax, kick wax is essential for traditional classic cross country skis to ensure they gain traction on snow, allowing the skier to glide forward. The more effective the wax, the more efficient the skier. Different waxes cater to varying snow temperatures. Numerous wax products for classic skiing specify an optimal temperature range for use. It's crucial to discern if your skis are waxable or waxless since the latter doesn't necessitate kick wax. Classic skis featuring synthetic skins or fishscales in the kick areas eliminate the need for kick wax and are more suitable for novices.
What Is the Method for Applying Kick Wax?
Applying kick wax to cross country skis is straightforward and can be accomplished before setting out on the snow. You apply the wax to the ski bases by using a crayon motion in the kick zone, also termed a wax pocket. Apply one thin layer at a time (a total of three layers) and smooth each layer with suitable sandpaper or foam cork. Once the final layer is smooth, the task is complete.
There are additional wax types that can be applied to enhance ski performance. Klister wax is beneficial for snow conditions that are too slippery for conventional kick wax. Glide wax is applied to the ski base outside the kick zone to facilitate smooth forward gliding.
